Genoa Nebraska Indian School

Appealing larger format cabinet card, (5 ½” x 6 ½”), identified on the back by one of the students as their classes at the Genoa Nebraska Indian school.  According to the Native Heritage website, “The Indian Industrial School at Genoa, Nebraska was the fourth non-reservation boarding institution established by the Office of Indian Affairs. The facility was completed in 1884 and operated until 1934, a full half of a century. Now restored, it is owned and operated by a foundation as the Genoa U.S. Indian School Museum. The building is listed on the National Register of Historic Places.”  We see a large number of Native American children of various ages.  A few students appear to be Caucasian but they certainly could be part Native American heritage.  It is the typical school class photo with a few kids with great smiles but most have the “do we have to be here look on their faces”, especially with the girl with her arms crossed in disgust!  The image is in very good condition with strong tones and contrast.  The back of the mount does appear to have been exposed to moisture around the edges at one time but this is a fabulous image with great historical value.
